The networked freebie vendor system is owned and operated by NCI/New Citizens Incorporated. Primary Freebie dispensing vendors can be found at all NCI Campus and also at most NCI InfoNodes. This system may also be in use at Linden locations as the request of Linden Lab's community team. If you have any questions, suggestions, or complaints, please contact the NCI Freebie Director (see Jobs) via IM. Comments left with Linden Lab personnel may or may not get to us.

Anyone can submit items as NCI Freebies. If you are a creator who would like to submit an item(s), please contact us. The following are the main criteria apply:

  1) You have the legal right to give out copies (e.g. it was made by you or someone has given you explicit permission to share it)
  2) It is non-commercial (not that landmarks to a business can be included in the box)
  3) The item is not *Adult* in nature,
  4) The item cannot be easily used for griefing
  5) The items(s) or process do not violate the SL Terms of Service or Community Standards.
  6) The items have the correct permissions set
       - All items must be at least Copy-Transfer permissions
       - The permissions can be changed by us before distribution if so specified (* see note below ) 
       

* Note: We have a limited capability to distribute “no transfer” items, but for us to do so, you will have to trust NCI with at least one transfer-enabled copy. This is dictated to us by the architecture of the vendor system, and the constraints of LSL and SL permissions. It is not something we can change.

If you wish to add an item to the NCI freebie collection please follow the following guidelines:

1. The minimum requirement is copy and transfer, otherwise the items cannot be distributed
2. We recognize that many people prefer not to distribute full-permission items. However, please note that
   1. Proir to distribution the permissions will be changed as specificed by you (see more later)
   2. The full permission items will be kept in a safe location and will never be distributed.

For example: “My First Freebie”
Avoid using characters such as ' and \ / as they are misunderstood by the web server

The texture will be used to display the item on the Freebie Vendor. Follow these criteria:

1. The texture must be 256×256 pixels
2. The font must be ARIAL
3. The font size must be large enough to see at a distance
4. It must contain the word “FREE” (preferably red)
5. Name the texture the same as the box, but insert a hyphen in front of the name (e.g. “-My First Freebie”)
6. the texture needs to be set to full permissions (copy, modify ad transfer)

1. name the notecard the same as the box, but with add “info” (e.g. “My First Freebie Info”)
2. state that you created the items (or state the reason why you believe that you can transfer ownership)
3. state the you give permission to NCI to give the items to others
4. state the desired permissions that the items should have (e.g. mod, transfer and copy)
5. change the permissions of the notecard to be “no-modify”)

Give the box to the Freebie Director (currently Blu Laszlo)

1. The Freebee Director will confirm receipt of the items
2. The Freebie team will assess the item(s) for suitability to include in the Freebie collection

Size:
A standard size 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 meter cube (the default rezzed prim)

Textures:
256 x 256 Set to “Full Bright” No more than two textures per box

Graphics:
Image of contents Creator Name and/or Company Logo Brief Description of Contents The word “FREE” Use “Ariel Black” font Font Colors appropriate to background Short blurbs, warnings, etc., as appropriate (Note: The box graphics will also become the freebie graphics in the NCI InfoNodes when that project is done.)

Contents:
Box should contain: - Freebie(s) - Instruction or creator notecards (if applicable) - Creator Landmarks (if applicable)

Naming:
When possible (i.e., not requested otherwise by freebie donor/creator) box should be named in the format of “Freebie Name” in Name field and “Freebie by Creator Name” in Description field

Permissions:
Boxes should be Copy/Modify/Transfer & “Allow Anyone to Copy” Unless other arrangement with creator/donor for more restrictive perms has been made

Scripts:
All scripts handed out as freebies should be set to “not running” or be commented out.

Weapons & Explicit Content:
No NCI freebie box should contain weapons or sexually oriented content.

Textures:
Free textures should be confirmed as free with the creators wherever possible. Due to requirements of SL permissions system almost all commerical textures are sold with full permissions. So we have to be careful here. There is no need to go back and confirm existing textures in the freebie section.

Archive:
When you place a new freebie, please send me a copy (boxed) for us to archive, so we are not dependent on just one person's inventory.

We are trying hard to make sure that all of the items in our system are genuine freebies that are intended to be distributed. However, it is possible there is stuff in the system that should not be. If so, we want to get rid of it! If you are a creator and see an item of yours in this vendor that was not intended as a freebie, contact NCI and we will remove it immediately, and IM back to confirm removal.

If there is an item in FreebieNode system that you are not listed as the creator of, but has been ripped or otherwise stolen from you, contact us anyway. It should be fairly easy to demonstrate that you are the creator. We are committed to making sure that all content are legitamate –not playing legalistic games with creators.
